Ever since, he’d learned that mental and physical well-being are correlated with cleanliness.This initiative was known as the Clean India Movement, or Swachh Bharat Abhiyan.

Motivated by Bapu’s vision, the Indian government, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, said on October 2, 2014, that India would be clean by 2019 through the elimination of open defecation, enhanced solid waste management, and increased public awareness of the value of cleanliness.

Objectives of the Swachh Bharat Mission

Reducing openly urinating and providing basic sanitation amenities, such as toilets, solid-liquid waste disposal systems, clean drinking water, etc., is one of the campaign’s main objectives. In 4041 statutory towns and cities around the nation, it seeks to clean the streets, highways, towns, and infrastructure. A gram of excrement can harbor millions of viruses and parasites, according to UNICEF. An annual one lakh children pass away from diarrhea due to viruses and parasites.

The mission’s primary goal was to eradicate open defecation in India by 2014, but it also sought to raise public awareness of the issues caused by improperly managed solid and liquid waste. The Swachh Bharat Mission sought to improve the cleanliness of streets, buses, offices, drainage systems, and waterways.

Making the nation’s residents aware of their greatest responsibility to preserve cleanliness and stop dirt from spreading throughout the nation is another goal of the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan.

The Launch of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan

The Swachh Bharat Abhiyan is a long-term initiative. India is a large country, therefore making improvements will need careful planning. The two Indian cleaning campaigns that came before the Swachh Bharat Mission cleared the way for the most fruitful cleaning campaign of 2014–2019.

The idea for the campaign originated during a seminar in March 2014 that UNICEF and the Indian Institute of Technology hosted. Later that year, the Swachh Bharat Mission was launched on Mahatma Gandhi’s birthday, the father of our country. It was an ambitious undertaking that needed building 90 million toilets nationwide. The mission’s level of seriousness might be  evaluated upon learning that the project has a 1.96 crore rupee budget allocated by the government.

In order to raise awareness, the Prime Minister also proposed nine public figures: Salman Khan, Priyanka Chopra, Baba Ramdev, Shashi Tharoor, Kamal Hassan, Anil Ambani, Mridula Sinha, and the whole cast of the well-known television serial Taarak Mehta ka Ooltah Chashmah. A chain system could not be formed until nine more people were nominated.

Clean Schools

The Indian government also started the Clean India: Clean Schools Campaign in combination with the larger Swachh Bharat Mission. The campaign’s objectives included providing separate restrooms for boys and girls in schools, suitable sanitary facilities for students who are menstruation, a handwashing station that can serve at least ten pupils at once, soap availability, etc.

The Challenges 

Although the Swachh Bharat Mission’s extraordinary achievement, several tasks remain unfinished. The construction of lakhs of toilets by the Indian government was an excellent job. But now more than ever, the Indians’ mindset needs to be altered. Even though most homes have toilets, many people believe that it is better to urinate outside. They do not want to “spoil” their homes by using the restroom inside the house to urinate. These folks must understand that the outside world is just an extension of their houses. Their home is Earth. The earth needs to be kept clean by people.

Step Towards a Better Tomorrow

The Swachh Bharat Abhiyan is a large-scale initiative. Making our emotions cleaner is equally important as the Clean India program. Respect for women, respect for one another, and refraining from insulting one another in the name of caste or religion are all imperative. It is only then that we may declare ourselves to be both spiritually and physically pure.

PM Modi stated that the goal of this mission is to instill a sense of patriotism in the populace rather than pursuing any political objective. Collaboration is essential, and since the task cannot be completed by one individual or by the government alone, everyone involved must commit 100 hours a year to it. It is the duty of every Indian citizen to maintain India’s cleanliness and environment.

The mission lowered the incidence of death and fatal diseases in rural areas and provided an annual benefit of Rs. 50,000 to households living in such areas. Clean India’s increased employment prospects helped the country’s GDP and economy by drawing in a large number of tourists from around the globe.
